Medication adherence is important not only for patient wellbeing, but also for clinicians to understand the effect on an individual of a prescribed dose so that they can modify it if it not having the desired effect. It is also important in clinical trials of drugs, as in all these cases the clinicians have to take the patient’s word for it that they took the prescribed dose at or near the correct time. While pill boxes and mobile phone reminders can help, they don’t have an accurate auditable log of when the medication was actually taken. The PillPad device is a portable medication dispenser with a refillable cartridge which locks out the patient when a dose should not be taken, reminds the patient to take the pill on time with visual and audio alarms, and logs the time the pill was actually removed in a contemporaneous record.
